Mezzo

Monday 4:50-5:35pm, 45 min - $140 per term at Stage Door Studios

A 45 min group singing class for Intermediate aged students.

Stage Door's Mezzo Group Singing Class offers a fun and engaging blend of singing instruction and music education.
Our aim is to establish a safe and inclusive environment for self-expression, honour student voices, and learn the basics of performance and music theory.  This class will see students dive into essential skills like sight-singing and music theory alongside learning rewarding and more challenging pieces of music. Through lively lessons, students will explore musical notation, key signatures, time signatures, intervals, and harmonies. The class will sing a variety of repertoire, taking into account the interests of the group. New and more challenging repertoire will boost vocal technique and musical expression, all while preparing singers to take their voices to the next level.

There are many social-emotional and health benefits to group singing. Among them include fostering a sense of belonging, community, well-being, and healthy vocal tone. In addition, the creative expression and human connection inherent to group singing can promote greater engagement and result in lasting friendships. Here is a wonderful overview of the many advantages to singing with others: Benefits of Singing

Mezzo students will rehearse towards Singing Recitals in the middle and at the end of the year.
(See below for more information about Stage Door's 2025 Singing Recitals).

Students are asked to bring along a bottle of water, pencil, & black folder for music.

Homework for Mezzo

The focus in our Mezzo class this week was BREATH CONTROL.

Breath control refers to managing your breath while singing. Solid breathing technique is the bedrock of good singing, because it helps us sing longer phrases, stay in tune, maintain consistent tone and control volume and range. Better breath control = better singing.

We practiced several breathing exercises including breathing out and singing through straws.

To apply conscious breathing technique to our song “Something in the Water” we looked over the first page of lyrics, highlighting where we need to take breaths.

Homework this week is to:
Mark in all of the breaths for the second page of "Something in the Water";
Warm up on the way to our next lesson by first breathing and then singing through a straw;
Work on the solo and small group sections of the song; and
Practice the body percussion for the song.

Next week we will focus on finishing our first song for term 3!
A reminder that students should ALWAYS bring their lyrics and other resources to each class so these can be used to make notes on each week. We will be working on solos next week.

Welcome back to all of our wonderful Mezzo Singers!

This week our focus was on TIMING AND RHYTHM.

Timing and rhythm are necessary skills in singing if we are to stay in sync with the music and other performers.
Rhythm refers to the pattern of beats in a song (or the 'drive' or 'feel' of a song), while timing relates to staying in sync with the rhythm. If a singers timing is off, the song can sound messy or out of place.  Having good timing and rhythm are especially important when singing in a group so that everyone stays together and sounds polished.

Our fous this week links closely to last week’s focus on listening. Staying in time relies on being able to hear and respond to the beat, other singers, and the music around you. Good listening helps us to match our rhythm with the group, stay on beat, and blend better with others.

This week we had fun experimenting with body percussion and creating 8 count percussive patterns with a partner.
Our Term Three song 'Something in the Water' is already sounding really lovely.
This week we focused on adding body percussion throughout the song.

Homework this week is to keep timing and rhythm in mind while singing through the song and practicing all of the body percussion!
