Musical Theatre
Musical Theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. At our musical theatre classes students can expect a little bit of singing, a little bit of dancing and a little bit of acting, and a LOT of fun! Stage Door Musical Theatre classes have been running since 2011 and are our most popular offering, providing a great, fun, social environment for students to create, collaborate and develop in a safe, friendly space.
Students can expect to: learn theatre craft; make friends; build confidence; play drama games; and get creative - all while rehearsing song and dance routines from the charts, movies and musicals, ready to perform at our end of year Musical Theatre Showcase.
As any successful performing arts teacher or administrator would tell you, a well run music, drama or dance program should not be about churning out little show ponies and pint-sized divas.
Stage Door's Musical Theatre classes aren't just about singing…. they aren't just about acting….. and they aren't just about dancing…… They are the culmination of all of these performance disciplines, and ultimately, they are about fun, friendship, confidence boosting and overall musical theatre craft.
The 4 key areas of Musical Theatre - Stage Craft, Acting & Characterization, Singing, and Dance & Movement - will be taught each term through various games, exercises, rehearsals and performances. Each key area will receive equal attention throughout the year, though from term to term we may focus more on certain areas.
In 2024 we introduced a Musical Theatre Dance Class, to cater to any Musical Theatre students, and others wanting to focus on dance technique and storytelling through song. In 2026 we are excited to be expanding this offering so that there are now two Musical Theatre Dance Classes - one for Intermediate aged students (ie Year 7&8) and one for High School aged students (ie Years 9-13).
At the end of the year all Musical Theatre Classes take part in our annual End of Year Musical Theatre Showcase performance at the Whakatane Little Theatre. Details about performance dates and times will be made available at the start of the year.
Please note that spaces in our musical theatre classes are limited and will be allocated in the order in which enrolment requests are received, and then confirmed on receipt of Term One invoice payment.
