Today we learnt about the sixth 'tool' from our Actors Tool Kits: Empathy.
BRAVO CLASS ACTING 'TOOL KIT':
- Face
- Voice
- Body
- Intelect
- Listening
- Empathy
We watched several videos to help us understand the concept and practice of empathy, and discussed how empathy can be a great tool for actors to use.
Being able to empathize with a character you are portraying is not only important, but imperative. To be great actors we must put ourselves in our character shoes, work to relate to them, and to embody their feelings, experiences and reactions.
Homework this week is to practice empathizing with characters.
Students have been challenged to think of 5 different characters that they know well.
These could be characters from a book, film, play, musical, or television programme.
Once they have chosen a character Bravo students should think of a specific moment or situation that their character finds themself in, then imagine what it would be like to be in that situation themselves.
- How would they feel?
- How would they react?
- What are the contributing factors influencing why their characters are behaving and reacting in that way?
We look forward to discussing this homework together in class next week as we practice employing our 'tools' in some fun Improv games!
