TERM ONE SONG: Hakuna Matata
From The Lion King
With music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice
This fun song comes from the 1994 Disney Animated film The Lion King. Although now over 30 years old, The Lion King still remains the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time!
The storyline follows Simba, the young lion prince, who flees his kingdom when his father, King Mufasa dies. In exile Simba befriends meerkat Timon and warthog Pumbaa, who introduce him to the concept of ‘Hakuna Matata’ to try to teach him to forget his troubled past and live in the present. "Hakuna matata" is a Swahili language phrase which in English means "no trouble" or "no worries" and "take it easy".
TERM TWO SONG: Castle on a Cloud
From Les Miserables
With music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel and Herbert Kretzmer
Les Misérables is a ‘sung-through musical’ (meaning there are no spoken words, only sung). It is based on the 1862 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo and is set in early 19th-century France. The musical tells the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption. Jean Valjean adopts a young orphan girl called Cosette.
Our song "Castle on a Cloud" is sung by Cosette, who - before she is adopted - dreams of a beautiful life, instead of her sad and lonely life with the dreadful Thénardiers. Cosette imagines a "castle on a cloud" where all children are free to play and where she is loved and cared for by a beautiful lady dressed in white - a vision of her mother, Fantine.
